We cannot speak of one
route, but most pilgrims entered Spain across the Pyrenees
from St Jean Pied de Port in France. Click
here to see the Camino route on a map of
Western Europe. You'll find it evenmore impressive.
The 800 kilometers
(500 miles) Camino is a mixture of rough paths,
paved roads, cobbled streets and dirt tracks that have
been embellished over the centuries with hostels, hospitals
and churches. The route goes through hills and valleys,
cornfields, vineyards, woods, villages and towns.
Because of the rainy
and temperate climate the landscape reminds you more of
Ireland or Brittany than of Spain. It has the same mystique.
The inhabitants are from Celtic descent.
