The Himalayas.

Containing nine of the world's ten highest mountain peaks, Nepal is a true Himalayan kingdom. The Himalayas cover three fourth of the land in Nepal. It is home to the loftiest peak in the world: Mount Everest, with a height of over 29,000 ft.

Nagarkot

Nagarkot, is one of the most scenic areas in Nepal and is renowned for its spectacular view of the Himalaya. It is one of the best spots to view Mount Everest as well as other snow-topped peaks of the Himalayan range of eastern Nepal. With an elevation of 7,000 ft, Nagarkot also offers a fantastic panoramic view of the Valley.

The local people are friendly and some open their homes, so visitors can get a better understanding of their way of life.

Mount Everest

Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world. The elevation is some 29,000 ft. Her name in Nepal is Sagarmatha. It means: goddess of the sky.

Attempts to climb her, always from the Tibet side, started in the 1920s. All were unsuccessful. After the second world war Tibet had closed its borders and Nepal, previously inaccessible, had done the opposite. Starting in 1951, expeditions from Nepal got closer and in 1953 the New Zealander Edmund Hillary and the Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay reached the summit.

Since then, more than 600 climbers from 20 countries have climbed to the summit by various routes from both north and south. Climbers' ages have ranged from nineteen years to sixty. At least 100 people have perished, most commonly by avalanches, falls in crevasses, cold, or the effects of thin air.

On our flight from Delhi to Kathmandu, I had excellent views of the mountains.
